Troubleshooting help with desktop system

Hi everyone,

I've been having some odd, intermittent problems with my desktop system (homebuilt) that I was hoping someone could help me sort out :)

Basically, sometimes my computer will refuse to start up - I never get anything showing on screen (it stays completely black) and the keyboard and mouse don't light up. Looking inside the case when this happens, the CPU fan isn't turning though all the other system fans are, and all four
phase LEDs on the motherboard are lit up. It seems the only way to get it to start again is to force a shut down and try powering back on - but this only works about 1/10 of the time and I have been unable to get it to start up again for 30 minutes at a time trying this.

I have tried re-seating the CPU and re-connecting all the power cables to the motherboard to make sure it's not just a loose connection somewhere. After doing this is started up again, but only after faffing around turning it of and on again so I'm not sure if it made any difference.

The problem always seems to occur when something goes wrong with starting back up from sleep mode. The first time it happened was when I'd accidentally started the computer back up from sleep late at night, couldn't be bothered to wait for it to boot up and then sleep manually, so I just pressed the power button until it turned off again. Next morning it started with this problem. (Not a great idea I know, but it was late and I was tired)

This morning it happened again - the computer went to sleep on its own as I'd left it idling and when I tried to start it up again it just flat out refused. Again, turning it off and on again a few times was the only way to get it to respond (good old IT crowd advice)!

Anyway, here are my system specs.

Mobo: Gigabyte P55A-UD3
CPU: i5 750 - 2.66Ghz
RAM: 8Gb 1600Mhz
PSU: Corsair HX 750W
GPU: ATI HD7770

I suspect I need to replace something (which I don't mind as the system is fairly old apart from the RAM and GPU) but I'm not sure what.

Any help/suggestions would be awesome, cheers :)

I'm afraid not! And it's only an intermittent problem. It's the power supply the most likely candidate?

Flick the switch on your PSU about 30 times in fairly quick succession while the PC is powered off, but still plugged into the mains.

On some PSU's this performs a special function that 'might' resolve the issue.

No seriously, I'm not joking.

Hmm, so I'm guessing you think it's my power supply then? I'd rather just replace it if it's dodgy.
