I have seen posts about this but not to what I am interested in about.

with 2 full speed 16x channels...will running 2 2gb Radeon 7850's outperform a 7950 in crossfire?

new egg has some hella deals with 7850s for 105 versus lowest 7950s sitting at 240ish. not much of a difference price wise...but still good deals. Gpu boss doesn't have a 2 card configuration to check against.

Solution

He is citing prices from Newegg, so US prices. UK prices are usually alot more expensive. Maybe you should read the prices he mentioned in the first post again....

For the OP. Here are some benchmarks of xfire 7850's with 7970ghz ed. card included: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/his_radeon_7850_ipower_iceq_4gb_review,11.html

The 7850 crossfire put up way higher...
Yes 2x 7850 would be faster than a single 7950. It would be somewhere around a 7970ghz ed. Maybe even more, but not by much.

If 64 bit games become more common, the extra gb of ram on the 7950 may help more. Not a big difference though. At worst you would have to lower Anti aliasing to get desirable performance, if you happen to run into a shortage of memory. It probably wouldn't be a big issue at all for a year or two yet though. I'd probably go for the xfire 7850 setup. Or I would buy a 7950 and crossfire that in a couple months time, before they vanish off the shelves all together. I'm currently waiting for the black friday sales to get my second 7950. :)

PS: Remember that xfire cards does not double the memory amount. That will be determined by the first card's amount of memory.

The 7850 crossfire put up way higher numbers than a single 7950, or 7970ghz ed. for that matter.

Solution
7850 in Crossfire will outperform a 7950, but provided the game likes Crossfire or uses it at all. I would rather get a 7950, for more consistent performance, and the ability to add another when an upgrade is needed. If you get two 7850 now, you'll have to ditch both of them when you want to upgrade.

You can also OC the 7950 very easily to 7970 levels.
The prices are good for the 7850's, if your looking to try CF, for the price it would not be a bad time to try it. CF can be quirky at times and some games play beeter on a single GPU.
I recommend CF for an upgrade to pair with an exsistling GPU usually.

Well.. I haven't been able to make a solid choice. Building an AMD system and don't want to double the cost of the build with 2 gpus which is why the 7850s looked reasonable. However, I am trying to future proof as well a bit - but in that regard I feel that Xfire'd 7850s or the 7950/70 should hold on well for sometime, and fit within power availability

setup so far is:
Fx-8350
M5a99Fx
16gb Ballistix Xt
CX750m
256gigSSd/3TB barracuda
Win 8.1
