I recently did a fresh install of Windows 8 and upgraded to Windows 8.1. I'm having some strange problems with MP4 playback that I've never had before on Windows 8.1 or older.

Here's a screenshot of the problem in VLC: http://i.imgur.com/Czy0M7w.png

Here it is in Windows Media Player: http://i.imgur.com/S7Lps1Y.png
The video doesn't even play in WMP, only the sound works. It just sits there looking like that.

I have no problems watching youtube, playing games, netflix, etc. No weird artifacts. I'm fully updated and using the most recent Nvidia drivers.

Was this after or before you installed the codec pack? If it was after you installed k-lite, there were probably certain codecs that got installed that worked properly for those programs and not the player you normally used. There may be an update that addresses the issue at some point. They update the codec pack quite often. I usually uninstall and get the latest every few months just to keep up to date. :)

I've always been told to avoid k-lite codec pack like the plague, but that was years ago. Is it totally safe to install/uninstall these days?

I've been using it for years, and have never had any problems while using it. Every now and again a new type of file format comes out, so I uninstall it from the control panel, and then install the latest version. No different from updating a video card driver.

I recommend just using the default settings though, because if you change options during the installation process it may have adverse effects. Trust me, there are a lot of options during the install process. lol

Windows media home cinema has a ton of options in it as well. Way more than I even know to look at honestly. lol. I like the option to stretch screen sizes manually to fit a screen better best I think. Custom resolutions. Great for movies with black bars. :) All subtitles work, and sometimes you just have to enable them manually. Very high quality picture if watching 720p/1080p.

Unfortunately installing the k-lite codec pack didn't seem to fix it. Any other ideas?

Edit: If I open the video in the Windows 8 Metro video player it looks perfectly fine. Also looks great when importing in Premiere Pro CS6. Why is that?
