Hi all,

I *think* that I want to upgrade a few pieces and I don't really know shit. I'm currently running an Asus Sabertooth 990FX with a Phenom II 3.3GHz, video card is MSI 680 GTX, 16g Kingston ram, and a 750W power supply.

My roommate has the 670 gtx but has a newer motherboard, his seems to run everything better than mine does...I have screen tearing and just overall low FPS in most newer games with the settings on Ultra (everything doesn't run as smooth as what I have seen, for example, with the Battlefield 4). I can't really figure it out...I'm wondering if I need to upgrade the motherboard? the Processor? My monitor (23' Acer 5ms led)?

I'd love any input because I definitely don't know enough...

The most cost-efficient upgrade would be to get an FX 8350.

Also, the motherboard doesn't directly affect gaming performance. What processor does he have?

Also, BF4 is pretty CPU-intensive.

Thanks for the suggestion on the FX8350, it looks nice, not too costly either on Newegg.

My roommate is running a mid range i5 (I forget which one exactly at the moment).

Would switching my motherboard and processor to Intel have any beneficial effects on the video card that I am using?

I thought I had heard to run Nvidia with Intel and AMD with ATI/AMD or is that just a rumor?

Would there ever be a situation where I would definitely need to upgrade or change my motherboard? I mean, if it is true that running my video card with Intel products would be best, then I don't mind spending a bit of money on something that will last me...

Again, thank you for the info.

Sounds about right. His processor is (most likely) a lot better.

If the Intel CPU you would get is better than your current CPU, then yes. But, I would not recommend switching to Intel if you don't plan on getting a processor better than the 8350.

Just a rumor. I run an i5 3570K and a 7970, and they work very well together.

If you're looking to have the best performance, and willing to spend about $500-$600, that would be a situation in which you would need to go Intel.

But, you have to ask yourself if it's worth it to spend that much when a ~$200 8350 will be a pretty large upgrade from your current CPU.

Thanks for all the advice. I was just doing some reading around and it seems on par with what you're saying. I think I'll do the CPU upgrade and see how it goes!

Sounds like plan. Good luck, and I hope you achieve the performance you're looking for!
