Hi,
my room is across the house and i need to expand my network to have internet there(PC,ethernet).I have a phone jack there.
In my moms office we have a router that our internet provider gave us and it's connected to the phone line.I want to buy a router TP-LINK TL-WR740N http:// and i want read that you need to connect it to a modem and then to the computer. But my other router isn't connected to a modem. Also, how can i connect two routers to expand my network. They will be different brands

You'll need to set the second router as a repeater or a bridge. This way it will pick up the wireless signal of the first router and rebroadcast it (repeater) or allow you to plug into the router and get it (basically using the second router as a wireless adapter which makes me ask, why not just get a wireless adapter?).

As far as plugging into the phone line, it souds like you have a direct connection meaning no modem is needed. You would not however be able to use 2 routers at the same time as far as you cant plug both of them into the wall. Your ISP only provides one IP address, meaning you have to go to one device (a single router) then split the signal from there for any other devices you need on your network.

This too expensive.I just want to buy a router and use it for my internet connection.

Your only option to do it the way you want is to have the ISP come out and connect a second phone line to the jack in your room and run a new DSL connection for you. Of course they expect you to pay a second monthly fee for it but you can then hook it up as you describe.

You only have 2 options if you plan to use the current connection. You get a ethernet cable run between the 2 rooms ..phone cable will not work...and put a second router running as a AP. OR you get a wireless repeater but you said this was too expensive.

What everyone is trying to explain is that you CANT use 2 routers UNLESS one of them runs off the other one. This means that you cant have them both plugged into the wall. One of the gets plugged into the wall and from there the other router has to be plugged into the first router or pick it up wirelessly. Your ISP only gives you one IP address, the way you are trying to plug them both into the wall would require two separate lines with separate service on each.

One option you can consider that will allow you a function similar to what you want is a power line adapter. Plug one end into the main router then the other end into your second router.

You can use two routers, the second routers firmware would need to support bridge mode, which is very rare and normally requires a third party firmware like DD-WRT, which the TP-LINK TL-WR740N did have limited support for, up to version 2 hardware.
