So everything has been 100% fine on my HP Windows Vista system for years. I recently (4-5 months ago) upgraded the PSU and graphics card and all went fine.

So yesterday i was going some work and my system started the HP Hardware Check, now this all ways runs when I don't want it to, but I never think about it till it starts running. So When it started I closed out of what I was doing and clicked "cancel test" and then "are you sure" I hit "yes". It went through all the shutting down stuff fine.

Then 2-3 minutes later my system froze, Mouse still moved but I mean it was like a screen shot. Then it unfroze and I could click on things and the video I was listening to on Youtube started up and continued. Then it froze again, this time I tried to window out and it just cascaded more and more. Another words the freezing got worse and worse.

So I got the windows menu open and went to shut down. 5-6 minutes later the system finally shut down.

When I booted back up, the HP splash just stayed there.

I hit the power button and back on, and the HP splash came up the to the "Mediasheild" ROM Bios" detecting storage devices......

Nothing!... it just sits there,

Then I turned it off and back on and it did this again butt it detected the HD and went to the "loading windows files" then I got the error 100c and the other error is 1000c, which I believe is missing windows files.

So....

A) when I shut down that scan it bricked my HD.

B) it just so happen at that exact moment my HD went out.

So.. I can NOT restore to factory settings cause it gives me the 1000c error. BUT I do have the three back up disk I made when I got the system.

How (or can I) some how boot from them so the system replaces all the files missing or just does a fresh install.

If I bought a new HD from Bestbuy can I plug it up and use those back up disk to install vista again or do I have to buy a new OS?

I"m sorry for the long read but any and all help you can muster is most appreciated.

This is a bit crazy, I was able to go in a set boot order to CD from first. but then when I restarted system it didn't detect the drives.

It's almost funny how something working so perfectly can get so fucked up.

To be honest I doubt the backup disk I have fro this HP system would even intall anything on a new HD.
