I think your problem is because you are using a Windows copy from a computer, in a different one, with different components.

Since Windows XP, I think, there is a part of the OS that checks if any component has changed, and in the case you change a lot of components, the pc won't run. That was made to avoid people using the same OS on different computers.
With Windows 7 (and I think the same applies to XP and Vista), if you change your motherboard, you have to get a new copy (or reinstall the one from the other computer). Since you are using your laptop's Windows copy, it's detecting that there is another motherboard, and then it won't let you use that OS with that computer.

Solution: Get another Windows 7 copy, reinstall the existent one, or wait to get that Windows 8.

Btw, do you know which is the error code displayed?

You'll probably need to either install a fresh copy of Win7/Win8 on a CD or burn a fresh copy onto a CD and activate it that way.

I guess I'm lucky; I have all my drivers backed up and readily available to me.

It is for this reason that I would happily uninstall my graphics driver from the laptop and then try it in the other machine. I might remove a couple of other drivers too.

It could be that the driver installed on the laptop is conflicting fatally with the hardware on the other system.
