So i built my system a few months ago and it's been wonderful until last weekend. All of the sudden it shut down, before that I had no problems with it at all. I tried to power it back on it would light up and fans would spin for less then a second and go right back off again. I checked the power supply and it is still fine (even tried a different working power supply and it still did the same thing). So then I took everything out of the case and plugged the motherboard alone into the power supply and the motherboard lights up and appears to be working, then I added the cpu and again with the light up for a moment and then turns off (except the power light on the motherboard always stays illuminated, but the other lights on the motherboard go off). So now my question is this problem the CPU or the motherboard? Or would the only way to tell to be to replace one or the other? Thanks for any help.

System specs:
MSI z87-gd65 gaming motherboard
i5 4670
Gigabyte geforce gtx 770
storm stryker case
samsung ssd pro 840
western digital caviar blue 1tb
16gb ddr3 1600
Windows 8

I've an identical issue with a v700 and an Asus Z87 Pro motherboard. I decided to replace the mobo with an identical new one And I still get the same problem I.e fails to start.
If I disconnect the 8pin 12v cable then the CPU cooler fan does start. Also any items connected to12v molex connectors do receive power.

I'm raising a call with Coolermaster as the PSU is less than a week old.
if it a dead short in the system the power supply and mb would stay off to protect the rig. start with just one dimm and no gpu and see if anything comes on. on the pc itself look on the motherboard for burnt marks. if the pc shut down the mb mat have had a vrm failure. if that happened there may be a burnt spot on the back of the mb. if the mb has post it led. they should come on and lock up if the mb is posting.

Like I mentioned. I tried it with just the motherboard and all the lights of the motherboard came on. Tried it with one dimm and all the lights of the motherboard came on. When I add the cpu it won't power on anymore (or it powers on for a moment then goes off right away).
There are no burnt spots on anything.

I replaced the PSU and nothing so I replace the motherboard and again nothing so finally I replaced the CPU and it works fine now. Not sure what caused the CPU to quit, but it seems fine now so I am hoping it was just a fluke/bad part.
