Hi, I have windows 7 sp1, sometimes, not always, when I shut down my computer, a shut down message pops up, saying: waiting for programs to close. However, there are no programs under that list! then tasskhost window.exe will pop up for a second and the computer shuts down. I have tried reinstalling windows and factory reset the computer and it doesnt help! Its very annoying! Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Y'know it always struck me as being odd. When I first started using Windows 7, I got into the habit of having four of the desktop gadgets on the right of my display. Well, they were a novelty item, weren't they?

The odd thing was, sometimes after start-up, one or two and sometimes even all of them would fail to appear.

It kinda got me thinking like; what changed? Why does my computer exhibit different behaviour each time I start up my machine?

Well, Windows does change its settings from time to time and for a number of reasons.

You know how sometimes when Windows starts up or shuts down it tells you not to disturb it while it reconfigures itself? Like it sort of takes over and starts laying the law down? It says 'No! You can't...
The message you are getting is not uncommon. I routinely see this message on my laptops and occasionally on my desktop computer as well. If I manually close a couple of programs on one laptop (Adobe Bridge and Splashtop) before shutting down I can avoid that message. Both of those programs show up under Notification Area Icons. Check the Notification Area Icons to see what is running in the background. I agree that it is annoying and the only way I know of to stop it is to limit what you have in startup.

Well, Windows does change its settings from time to time and for a number of reasons.

You know how sometimes when Windows starts up or shuts down it tells you not to disturb it while it reconfigures itself? Like it sort of takes over and starts laying the law down? It says 'No! You can't start your computer and get onto e-Bay now because I'm going to make you wait ten minute while I reconfigurate myself. So there.'

Or you might be in a rush to get out and it says 'No! I won't shut down now. I'm going to make you wait ten minutes while I sort myself out. Does my hard-drive look big in this?'

Well no, Windows. You're fat because you're greedy. Greedy for our time and an acid test of our sanity...

Anyway, whenever Windows does anything, it has to write a file and log it. Windows is a right jobsworth in that respect.

And also, Windows purports to improve its performance over time. It does this by keeping track of how frequently programs are used and maintain a 'Superfetch' list which on paper, should help to anticipate the users needs, to some extent, by pre-loading the drivers and programs that are normally loaded when the apps are run.

As Windows closes down, it logs and writes and sets settings and so forth and sometimes, the system has to wait for the services to finish their house-keeping tasks.

In practice though, I have found that in general, the performance of computers tends to get worse over time and not better. I'm surprised that no-one has noticed this and it is for this reason that I have the 'Superfetch' service switched of in Computer Management.

For more information on how you can reduce the house-keeping load of the system and improve the performance of your machine in general, you should have a look at -
