My hard drive says i have used the same amount of data before the crash but my movies and music are gone. I tried a couple recovery programs with no luck. is there a way to wipe the hard drive without getting rid of windows 7? I have the cd but it doesn't install the drivers and they were a bitch to get again. someone please help this is so frustrating. I don't know why it says I have everything when I cant find it anywhere on my computer.

Your music and movies aren't in a hidden file are they?

Maybe they are in the Public documents folder?

Open up an explorer window by clicking on Computer and in the search box at the top right of the window, type in '.mp3' and then wait to see how much music it finds.

Is there anything in the recycle bin?

Does your account have 'Administrator' privileges?

Well, what were the circumstances of the crash? What was the computer doing?

How do you know that the amount of data on the drive hasn't changed?

Were your files on the same drive? Or maybe a different partition on the same drive?

If you open up the C: drive, you can roughly account for the data on the drive by right-clicking on each folder in turn and selecting properties. You will see how many files and folders there are and how much room they take up.

Obviously the Windows and Programs x86 folders will account for a lot and there is a hidden folder called Program Data that could store a lot of data too but, if you open 'Users', you can check to see how much data is being stored in your Documents folder by right-clicking the folder that is named after your account, usually your name, and selecting 'Properties' again.

How much data is there in your folder? How many files and folders?

How have you tried a couple of recovery programs? Is Windows 7 still running?

I recommend you clone the drive to an external hdd (http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ddrescue.html) then reformat the drive and re-install Windows 7 from scratch (sorry). When you get the drivers again, back them up to a cd or flash drive for future use.

You are then free to try to recover your files from the cloned drive. Try something like Asoftech Data Recovery which will scan the drive bit by bit.

Its a lot of trouble to go to unless the files are really valuable. When you get the drive reformatted, consider partitioning it and keeping all your data on the second partition.
