windows 7 taking 20s longer to boot since crash

hi,

my computer typically takes 20-40s to boot into a usable state, however yesterday I was backing up some files to an internal hard disk and my PC crashed. Even since then it's been taking at least 20s longer to boot.

It gets to the windows logo screen and sits there with the HDD LED barely flickering, for a good 20s, then the HDD gets active again and it boots into the desktop. I did a boot log with event viewer and it seems that BootSmssInitTime is significantly longer than it use to be 30s vs 4.5s. However, I'm unable to determine why this would be. Please could you advise what I could do to find the issue?

thanks for your suggestions. I did do a chkdsk with no issues. I eventually found out what it was. I noticed a new little icon in my task bar which said windows backup in progress, but when I clicked on it, it wasn't actually doing anything, presumably because my computer had crashed during the backup.

I don't know how much testing M$ did on this little piece of software, but a computer crash wasn't one of the things they tested. This bit of software keeps trying to run, but not actually doing anything. There's no option to stop it either and it doesn't appear as a process which I could stop. The only way I stopped it was to start another backup (of just a small directory) and when that ended, it finally stopped the errant backup.

When I rebooted, it shaved about 30s off the boot up time. Success!

Well, if you find Windows backup as useless and obtrusive as I do, you might want to disable it is 'Computer Management'.
