copy win 7 to hard disk then install from it onsite?

I want to go over to my buddies and put a hd into his computer and then install;l from the hard disk like xcopy but win 7?

Not entirely sure what you want to do here, but it sounds 1. impossible, and 2. illegal.

I'm thinking you want to copy your friends Windows 7 installation onto a hard drive, bring it home, put it in your PC and have it work?

I believe what OP wants to do was copy the entire Windows 7 install files to the HDD. Then run Windows 7 setup from the HDD itself. This was possible up to Windows XP. You can copy the entire XP disc to HDD and run setup from it. Starting with Vista it's point less to do that, and for it to work properly, it requires smart drive. Without smart drive will take days for Windows to finish installing.
During setup it still requires the product key. So his friend still need his own product key to install Windows 7.

from an active part containing install files, after install change install part to logical?
