Ram being halved?

Hi,

I had 4 x 4Gb G.SKILL DDR3 installed and it always read 16Gb (15.9 usable). All fine.
I also have a AMD FX8350. Never had issues.

I started wanting to upgrade my system and replacing parts one by one. Next on my list is to improve my cooling so I can O.C more and obviously keep my temps down.

I install the Corsair H100i system all fine no problems. Boot up and suddenly it's only reading 8gb.
Hmm, I open her up and Reseat and shuffle around my RAM sticks. All seated fine. Still only reads half.

Ok, I pop out the cooler and check my CPU for any bent pins. Its perfectly fine. I's not that old and is in perfect condition. After reseating my CPU its still only reading 8Gb.

I start trying to eliminate faulty RAM, one stick at a time. No stick has any problems, did a memtest, all fine. I notice however it only reads half if I have only 2 sticks in. (4 out of 8gb and 8 out of 16).

I was due some new RAM anyway so I got 2 new sticks of G.SKILL TridentX 2x8GB F3-2400
(This way I could increase to 32 should I ever feel over the top) So still 16GB but over 2 sticks instead of 4 and faster RAM. Still reads only half! Getting frustrated I try the sticks in each pair to rule out a faulty DIMM slot. Still half.

BIOS detects the sticks are there but still only reads the 8GB.

I'm getting rather frustrated now so hopefully someone here can offer brilliant advise!

I am running windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit.
My motherboard is a ROG Crosshair V Formula Z. (Bios all up to date)

I have tried resetting the CMOS still same issue.

If anyone can offer some solutions to try I will quite possibly marry them!

Il attach some pictures to provide as much info as poss!

Thanks for any help in advance!

Yeah it seems a bit strange. Shouldn't the BIOS at POST still report 16GB though instead of 8 regaurdless of windows??

Wondering if I somehow managed to cause damage to the MOBO during my install...?

Running latest version of Corsair Link, No firmware files on there to download to even update it.

Also why does it report 8GB at this stage?

Is that normal if BIOS detects both sticks?

Hi, maybe a bit late but i also have an fx 8350 and the exact same thing happened to me when i changed my cooler from the stock one to a noctua nh-u12s, from fishing about on the internet it looks like due to the locking mechanism on amd coolers it is quite common that they cause the processor to be too tight and it actually affects the memory controller, i've seen other people with amd processors reporting the same problems online when they change their cooler excluding myself who is having the exact same issue; i run windows 7 and fedora which both recognise all 16gb (i have two corsair vengeance 8gb cards) but only allow me to use 8gb which particularly annoying seeing as i use the full 16gb splitting it between virtual machines and when animating on maya.

In conclusion it looks like it's probably down to the cooler being too tight (intel wouldn't have this problem as long as the cooler is installed properly because you can tighten the cooler accordingly in contrast to amd) Hope my experience helps you come to a conclusion.
