Can't connect to open/passworded WEP, but can connect to WPA, WPA2

I have an Acer Aspire 7741G-3674. I've had it for several years, but I had to replace the hard drive. I haven't been able to connect to WEP since. I've searched the internet for Drivers endlessly, and I've replaced all of the relevant drivers from the Acer website and Atheros websites, but no dice.
I have phone data, and I can use FoxFi [Great app, btw] to launch a private hotpsot for my computer, but I'm limited in what I can upload to a webserver, so though I can get my work done, I can't show my bosses, especially since I work with high resolution files. I only get 2 gigs a month, and my neighbor has a free, open connection WEP network that she allows me to use. Unfortunately, we can't change the encryption, and I can't connect to WEP!
Please post suggestions for this issue. I would appreciate any and all help; I'm a coder + designer; I'm not a hardware guy, you know?

I don't mind working for the solution; I'm not lazy. If I have to crack open the chasis, I'd be more than happy to do so, but I'm low on cash, so I won't be able to buy any replacements. I just need to get my WEP working - I just want to be able to do my job.
Thanks.

I've already checked this. No MAC restrictions are in place.
