DVD/CD-ROM drive shows up in device manager but doesn't recognise any form of disk

I tried installing BF4 with the reader but it kept asking me to insert a disk. I tried to reboot the PC but to no avail, then upgrade the driver - still no result. However, every time that I put a disk in the reader a little disk loading icon pops up and I can hear the reader spinning the disk.
Someone please help as a 23gb download doesn't sound fun to me.

Specs: Windows 8.1, HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NS95, Intel i5 3750k, Evga GTX 660, (If you need more info just ask and I will find it)

I should have added that this was a recent thing. I have always been able to install new software over it and watch films or play music.

It's a 3 disk installation. No downloading.

Splendid
Okay so the DVD can't even boot from the Windows disc, during post.
DVD drive is busted, just send it back for a exchange, if it's still under warranty.

Try plugging to another SATA port or change a SATA cable. This will most likely not work, but one last method before
RMAing.
