i5 4670k Requiring MASSIVE voltage?

My new parts arrived recently and today I just got my final piece, a Noctua NH-D14 Heatsink.

I have installed it, and now I have begun overclocking my Chip.

...But it's requiring 1.31v at just 4.2Ghz to be stable, anything lower than 1.31v will crash in a few minutes!

My RAM I tried 1600Mhz, and its rated 1800Mhz with no difference. At Stock settings my processor is 100% stable, and I can even lower the voltage to 1.1v @ 3.8Ghz without issue.

But I'm stuck at a wall with 4.2Ghz @ 1.31v, did I just get an inferior chip? :(

Most likely an inferior chip. I am in the exact same boat. I currently run my 4670k @ 4.0 ghz @ 1.21v. It takes me 1.3v to get to 4.2 and even then it is not 100% stable. Apparently there is a ton of variance among haswell chips with regards to what OCs you get at what voltages. My friend gets 4.5 ghz stable @ 1.25 volts no problems.

My cooling is exceptional and even @ 1.21v and 4.0 ghz the chip never breaks 60 C on prime 95 but no matter how much voltage i seem to feed it, (even with low memory clocks) it refuses to run stable past the 4 - 4.1 ghz mark. I have managed to get it to run stable at 4.2 but it needed 1.34v and I decided the gain was not worth the amount of voltage needed. I dialled back to 4.0 @ 1.21v and it is enough. Regardless a couple 100 mhz will hardly make a difference of even 2-3 fps in 9/10 games.

Well, guess my chip sucks for ocing. Pretty much hit a voltage wall after the 3.8Ghz Turbo boost speed lmao.
Dropped it down to 4.1 and lowered voltage to 1.27v, don't like over 1.3.

I didn't expect this much of a difference between my i7-930 and haswell, but holy crap. I guess the IPC REALLY increased!

I run SVP (Smooth Video Project) for realtime frame interpolation whilst watching Media, my i7-930 @ 3.8Ghz would only handle 1080p with basic interpolation, but the 4670k handles the heaviest interpolation, with only 40% CPU usage!
 
definitely sounds high voltage wise. ive had my 2500k@4.8ghz at 1.37v for almost 2 years. sandy bridge is different though as overclockers say anything 1.4v and below is fine. from what i know ivy/haswell require less voltage but also somehow put out more heat which limits their overclock. but in my brain it seems that every intel 'k' processor will hit 4.3-4.4ghz no problem.

My temps are caused by the voltage requirement, my HSF is installed properly. Stock settings I only get ~ 55C in P95

I have been having the same issues with two chips so far.

First one I could get mostly stable at 4.2 GHz at 1.275 volts but I didn't pay a premium for a "mostly stable" chip. I immediately noticed an issue when my stock clock voltage requirement was 1.211 volts.

Second chip was even worse. Same crappy 1.211 volts used for the stock clock but I couldn't overclock it at all. Any move, even while uping the voltage to 1.275 resulted in immediate crash and I am talking even going from 3.8 GHz to 3.9 GHz.

Got my third one coming in Thursday and god I hope it will actually at least get me to 4.2 GHz at 1.25 volts. Been 6 weeks without a computer because Intel apparently isn't doing any testing or quality control on their "k" series chips to insure you can actually use the unlocked multiplier to actually Overclock their chips.

Honestly really wish AMD hadn't stumbled because one thing about AMD is that if you bought a "Black Edition" with unlocked multipliers, you absolutely knew you could get at least a good overclock on them. Intel doesn't seem to give a flying fart about that.

In any case, I think there are just a lot of "bad" Haswell chips out there that can't really accept an overclock even with unlocked multipliers.

I recently had some coolaboratory Pro I had ordered arrive, and I attempted delidding. It was quite easy to do, just spent a while scraping off the black glue and ROCK HARD crappy TIM off the die with a guitar pick. (Same paste as stock heatsink!?)

Covered the transistors with Liquid Electrical Tape to protect then, and applied the CLP. Got a solid 28C Drop of my max temperature across all cores.

haha lol my i5 4670k on 4.0 ghz is stable at 1.045volt :p
i have the cooler master 412 the temps are after 1 hour prime95 55degrees my room is 27degrees (summer time)
