It's quite strange you say this, I read through and installed my old wireless adapter (about 2 years old) and compared the speed - http://i.imgur.com/e2JdxQX.png
In case you don't realise, the left is the wireless and the right is the Ethernet.

In my case, the Ethernet cable is 3 metres long and the adapter is about one metre away from my router so I think that may have an effect, does anyone know why this happens?

A 802.11n or 802.11ac wireless connection (on the left) may well be faster than a 10/100 ethernet connection (on the right).

It will not be faster than a 10/100/1000 ethernet connection, as is typical on more recent motherboards, PCI-E adapters, and routers.

So if I was to upgrade my motherboard or buy a PCI-E network adapter then I would be able to get that speed down my Ethernet. Or would I need to buy a new Ethernet?

Both ends of the cable need to be gigabit capable. The router, the ethernet adapter in the PC, and any switches in between.

NOTE: This will only affect the speed to the router and on the internal LAN. Not to the internet and outside world. That depends on whatever speed you pay your ISP for.

Ok, I forgot about the router, so thanks for that. How would I check the max speed on there? Also, I still don't feel I've got the right solution - Do I have to upgrade my cable?

Thanks for the note despite already understanding that.

What's the router make and model?
(I added the note because there have been many posts asking "WHY do I only get 10Mbps if I have a 300Mbps WiFi adapter?" )

Technicolor TG582n

Yeah, I get that - my Mum used to think that there was a problem with our computer because of that.

From the specs: http://help.telecom.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/20377
"Featuring an integrated 10/100Mbps 4-port switch"

That is specifically why your wired speed reports 100Mbps. That's all that router can handle. If your PC is from the last couple of years, it can probably do 1000Mbps. But the router can't.

Network 'speed' is only as fast as the slowest link in the chain.

Ok then, thanks for the info. I don't think I'm going to change anything around anytime soon but it's good to know anyway.

Do 3 speed tests on lan and wifi post the speed and ping.

wifi is probably ok until a microwave is turned on and you get killed or if its not in the same room and someone else starts downloading a big file.
