Hi, thank you for reading. I have a MSI GTX 550 Cyclone and a MSI 880 GM-P51 motherboard. Both of them are PCIE 2.0X16. I was wondering if there would be any performance gain if I am to buy a GTX 780. Or would I have to buy a new motherboard along with the new graphic card? I am confused by how the slots work. I know they are backwards compatible. But does that mean they will not have any significant performance increase if I have a mobo in pcie 2.0 and a graphic card in pcie 3.0? Please enlighten me. Thank you very much.

Solution
There is no graphics card that can load PCI-E 2.0 X16 slot at full speed you must be fine with single GTX 780. PCI-E 3.0 needs when you SLI 2 or 3 cards that needs more PCI-E lanes.
8X lanes PCI-E 3.0 are the same with 16X lane of the PCI-E 2.0
