I'm building my first pc. I just bought some patriot viper ddr3 8gb 2133mhz ram, to go with my amd fx 8350 cpu and msi 990fxa-gd80v2 motherboard. The person who helped me at fry's said "it should work". It wasn't until I got home that I realized the box says "designed for intel 6/7/8". Can I still use this ram?

8gb Patriot vapor ddr3 pc3 17000 2133 mhz Ram. Does "XMP" mean anything? I'm reading that I may have to adjust some settings manually, will overclocking do the job for me?

it may default to 1333. if the board supports xmp profiles you'll have to select that in the BIOS. some BIOS' will have options to set ram speed................ 1333/1600/2133, etc........... ( UEFI BIOS ) it's not as hard as you might think. look through booklet that came with your motherboard or view the pdf file at the motherboard manufacturers website. ( install foxit reader........ google it........ to read the file ).
