Windows 8.1 Laptop Booting After Shutdown with Screen Closed

I have a week-old Samsung ATIV Book 4 laptop running Windows 8.1. Amongst other buggy things, the most troubling is that the computer tries to boot after I have done a full shutdown and closed the screen lid.

At least 4 times have I pulled the laptop out of my case and found that the battery is completely drained. More than 4 times, I've opened the screen lid to see a black screen with a white text message along the lines of "All boot options tried. Reboot system with Windows Restore or something something something." It will start up after holding down the power button to shut down and reboot.

A call to Samsung support had me go to the BIOS and set everything to "optimized defaults" (even though I had already done this). The tech guy then said the problem was with Windows 8.1, not the hardware or system bios. I can't help but wonder, however, why he had me "reset" the BIOS defaults if they already knew it was Windows 8.1. Seems to me like 8.1's bugs and glitches are making it a scapegoat for other issues.

I've seen many of those update tools fail to detect updates. I always check the BIOS version manually and then check the manufacturers website just to be sure.

If you are indeed completely up to date, then we will need to look somewhere else for what is waking the machine and draining the battery.
I have several mobile systems running Windows 8.1 and definitely don't have this problem. The one time I did open one of the systems up (a Surface Pro in this case) to find a dead battery, I realized I had forgotten to turn the system off before I put it in my bag.

I would start with checking the Samsung website for an updated BIOS / UEFI version. There may be issues with the system resuming from sleep, standby, or hibernation when it should not be, which the update solves.

Also be aware that if you close the lid on a system before allowing the system to completely shut down, it can occasionally go into sleep or hibernation (depending on the power settings of the system), instead of actually doing a complete shut down.

On Thursday, I ran Samsung's SW Update program, which installs firmware and BIOS updates. I won't close the lid until I'm sure everything has powered down. (My old Windows 7 laptop wouldn't shutdown completely if I closed it too soon, whether I was running Windows or Linux.) I've been especially careful to do so since this problem happened the first time. So far, with the exception of Wednesday, every day I've packed it up after shutdown and driven the 20 minutes to work, I've had this problem. The battery wouldn't be drained after 20 minutes, but the fans would be on and the base feels very warm, almost hot.
