Hi to the community. Well I have an INtel H57 chipset/motherboard and it can, at the maximum, hold up to 8 GB of RAM. I wanted to ask as to if I buy just a single module of 8 GB of ram and put it one of the two slots, will the 8 GB RAM be detected and will work or would I need to fill both the slots with some amount of ram ?

Solution
2x4GB

Even if your motherboard supported more, it would make no sense to get a single 8GB stick as you'd have some performance loss.

Something like THIS should work fine:

or THIS if you don't like red:

Make sure to read your motherboard manual, and go to the motherboard support site. There is a QVL memory list there for recommended memory however it's probably not up to date so you may not be able to buy any of it.

Finally, update your motherboard BIOS.

Musical delete the duplicate threads!

You will have a slight performance advantage using 2 sticks of RAM over a single stick as 2 sticks will allow for dual channel mode. That will give you 4% - 7% better overall system performance over a single stick.

But the problem is that my computer originally came with 2X2 Gb ram that is 4 GB of total ram and I dont know how but one of those 2 GB modules got sucked up : I thought my ram slot was destroyed. So that's why I am asking wether I should throw off my remaining 2 GB ram and ass an 8 GB module instead ?

Does your good ram stick work in the slot you think is faulty?

Ok guys I got this thing sorted out : The RAM slot which I was telling about is fine, just the RAM had some sparky moments. So I'd go with a 2X4 GB. Also, my H57 chispet supports RAM with 1333 mhz speed max. Will the PNY Optima RAM be a good choice ? From what i read on customer reviews on new egg to many modules die to soon,so i would pick another set just to be sure.
Look at the next set for instance,
