I am planning on installing a 64 bit Win 7 OS over my 32 bit. I backed up some files(music, pictures, etc) onto an external Western Digital MyBook(2tb). The external came with little to no paperwork in it, so I don't know if I'll be able to plug it back in and be able to get all my stuff off of it.

If you own the retail version of Windows, you can reinstall it as many times as you like, whether it is the same computer, or a different computer completely, as long as it is only installed on 1 computer at a time. That is the advantage of the retail version.

If it is the OEM version, it costs half as much, but you can only ever install it on 1 PC. You can reinstall it on the same PC again, but you may have to contact Microsoft for a new activation code. You cannot ever install it on another system.

There should be no problem. Regular files do not care about 32 or 64bit OS.

You will. Also you will find a file called "Old Windows" that will contain much of your data. It is preserved so you can move it to new folders. Backing up is still a good idea. The external drive should be seen as drive "d", "E" or some other letter in the new OS.

On the same PC with the same hardware? Multiple reinstallations, but only one at a time.

As long as you don't change the hardware, I don't think there is a limit.
