Hi, I have a front projector in my theater room but this room is only used for movies in the Denon DVD player. I would like to buy a Blu Ray player this month's Black Friday PLUS I would like to get a TV tuner for the projector so we can use it for more than just movies. So, I was on this site and looking at HTPC Build threads and had the following thought: would it be better to do an HTPC build for $400 - $700 vs. buying a Channelmaster CM7400 http:// or similar product, since the CM7400 is phased out & being replaced, plus buying the Blu-ray player?

I was reading the sticky on "BestConfigs: Home Theater PC" when I thought of his possibility. I think the cost of a blu ray player plus a TV tuner might almost be the same cost as a HTPC so do I get more for the money with the HTC? We also do not do any gaming so we are one of the few families who do not have any Wii's, Xboxes, Playstatons, etc, although we are getting closer to buying one in the future...maybe this Christmas we will finally take the plunge and make our 10 yr old daughter happy?

Thoughts?

An HTPC with an ATSC TV Tuner Card and a Blu-Ray drive would probably provide you with all that you need. In addition to watching live TV, and playing DVDs/Blu-Rays, you could also stream content from any subscription based video source (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, YouTube, etc...) You wouldn't need an overly powerful system for this. Just about any dual-core processor based system, 4GB of RAM and a low end discrete graphics card would be sufficient for your needs.

Hi,

It has component, S-video, video, RS-232c, RGB, and HDMI ports. It is an Epson Powerlite Pro Cinema 800.
The source of the TV is OTA HD broadcasts.

Thanks for the help.

This biggest complaint/difference with an HTPC over stand alone components is complexity. With a Blu-ray player it just works, same with a cable box. HTPCs like any computer requires occasional maintenance and has hiccups here and there which aren't that big a deal until your PlayRead/DRM starts acting up when there something you're really wanting to watch or record. Even with the issues I'm a big proponent of HTPCs especially the cable card/DRV management, my Wife not so much.
