So here's a stupid question that I probably know the answer to already. I have currently a maximus v formula motherboard and I'm going to get a maximus v extreme. Out of hopeful curiosity I am asking this question so bare with me because it's kind of stupid. Will I have to re-install my operating system when I swap them? They are almost identical except one is extended and has a plx chip. I'm guessing I probably do have to re-install.

Second question. I'm buying the maximus v extreme to make up for the bottle neck i'll get off of my lga 1155 3770k CPU when I SLI my cards. But do I really need the new board if I'm only doing two cards?

Solution
You probably would not need to re-install the OS given the closeness of the two boards. If you're only going to SLI two cards, there's no reason that I can think of for getting a new board unless you need to use the third PCI-Ex16 slot for some other card.

I guess I'll buy the cards one at a time and see if I end up needing the board or not. I can put off a possible re-install for a bit a longer that way.
