Please refer to all posts by Novembergal1948 to get a feel for my level of expertise (HAHA).

I notice that the IP addy for my router and the IP for my desktop are different. If it asks me for an IP which do I use?

In trying to set up a network it asks me to choose the router or access point I want to configure. Then MyNetN750 appears as an uconfigured device on my network. Then it asks for the PIN from the router label (8 digits, and I have checked and double-checked it). I enter it and am asked to give my network a name. (Here it says my network is being set up using WPA2-Personal). I enter the old network name the old boyfriend assigned years ago. Then it says it is setting up that network name. Then it says the network setup was unsuccessful.

In "troubleshooting" sequence for Internet Connections, it says "you have not chosen to connect to any of the available networks". At "show me a list of available networks", my network name is not listed. However, I did find networks named "FBI Surveillance Van" and "Get Your Own WiFi". So somebody around here has a sense of humor.

In "troubleshooting" sequence for Network Adapters, the following two problems were found:

None of the networks you have previously connected to are in range -- Not fixed (red circle with x in middle) and
A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken -- Detected (yellow triangle with exclamation point in middle)

Thank you, anonymous1,
I followed your advice and combined it with some other advice, and, Viola! Laptop is connected to Internet! So thank you, and I am very impressed. (It turns out that my network WAS there; it was just under the name "hidden network". Who knew?)
