64 bit upgrade question

I'm sure this has been answered but I can't find it. Long story short, I have Windows 7 Professional 32 bit and a hard drive that is about 5-7 years old. I have had many problems running FSX and other graphic intensive games, I think some of my issues are lack of memory. I do have 8 gig on this build, but I know the 32 bit O/S isn't accessing it. Anyway my thought it to buy Windows 7 64 bit. I was thinking that I should upgrade to a fast hard drive maybe some sort of SSD at the same time. The question is can I simply leave my present hard drive alone, add in the new one and install the 64 bit system on it and boot from that, then simply accessing the old drives files as if it were an external drive. I don't have a ton of stuff to save and could reinstall most of my software. Any thoughts or advise would be appreciated.

Disconnect the old drive, insert the new drive and do a clean install of 7 x64, then you can add the old drive back and copy your data off it and then reformat it or at least delete the old Windows install. You will of course need to reinstall old programs (and some could be an issue with x64). If STEAM is among the programs you can install a new STEAM executable and migrate your game drive contents.

An SSD IMO is a great option, I will be watching for some good deals this month. The best prices I got in the past year were last November and I am looking at loading up again this year.
