Would this CPU fan be an overkill?

My CPU I'm thinking of buying is Intel Haswell Core i5 4430.

I'm thinking of using Noctua NH-U12P SE2 (specs) as a CPU fan.

Would you think this to be an overkill, because that the latest generation CPUs are designed to dissipate much less heat than their predecessors?

As a replacement I'm thinking of buying some cheap top-down cooler fan (sub-45$).

This PC is going to be used for gaming, so the CPU is probably gonna get heated up...

BTW my chassis is ENERMAX Ostrog GT ECA3280B (see it's review posted on Tom's hardware portal).

Thank you very much.

Solution

Firstly, the cheap fan if it performs well like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

Secondly, without a shadow of a doubt, the 770. Just a fer better performer and has now recently had a serious price drop, so it is much better value for the price.

Well yeah, the cheap CPU fan is Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (Specs)

Yeah I read that in your (Tom's HW) portal.
It gonna take some time until the prices gonna propagate... about a month or two. Only then I'll buy the GTX 770.

So I'm gonna go with Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO !
Thx!

BTW the price difference between Noctua NH-U12P SE2 and Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is only 14$ (the Noctua's more expensive).

After knowing this, is it worth getting the Noctua rather than Cooler master?

The Noctua is an excellent cooler, as it shows that a silent fan doesn't compromise performance. If you want a silent, yet great performing cooler and don't mind the hideous brown and beige fans, yes.
