so my internet random stopped working a few days ago after that storm went over the south of the uk and from number of other forums people have come to the conclusion that my NIC on my motherboard has died. all i need to know now is whether this is fixable or if it is a new motherboard kind of job. thanks for any help in advance.

Pretty much if you get lights on the switch/router it is a good sign the interface is ok. It could be a issue but mostly it is software/driver issue for most other problems.

You can get a USB based ethernet port or a PCI based card...would be much easier than starting all over replacing a motherboard normally requires a new OS install unless you use a identical board.
