Should I upgrade my GPU in my case?

Hello there,

I have started to notice that my computer is not in par with the requirements of latest games, and now as I tried to play Battlefield 4 I have finally come to conclusion that I need to do some upgrades to keep up with the latest games.

I am currently having a i7 920 processor, Gigabyte EX58-UD5 motherboard and ATI Radeon 6870 GPU.

My question is that would there be any point in upgrading the GPU to a better and newer model of Radeon, or is my CPU a bottleneck, and should I invest into getting a new Processor and Motherboard instead?

I'm kind of hoping that it would be enough to just upgrade the GPU as I would not want to have to spend too much money on upgrading the computer at the moment.

Any feedback appreciated!

Your CPU should be about on par in single thread tasks with Ivy pentium IPC?
In mutlithreaded games past 3 cores usage, you should be pulling ahead of the i3's

If you are willing to OC the CPU, you should be doing fine

I think getting a 7950/760 should not be a problem

In most games, the GPU is still the main bottleneck

Thanks a lot for your reply!

I've already overclocked my CPU from 2.66ghz to 3.6ghz, I'll look into getting a Radeon 7950 then!

If you can afford it, my advice is one of the GTX770's:
- Asus DC2U
- MSI TF
- EVGA

There are pros and cons. AMD's main advantage is Mantle is coming for BF4, however it looks like Mantle adoption is mostly dead beyond that at least for a while since Microsoft and Sony aren't behind it.

The NVidia 770 also comes with three great games:
- Batman Arkham Origins
- Splinter Cell Blacklist
- AC4 Black Flag

Other advantages are:
- PHYSX
- Shadowplay (record at 1080p 60Hz. works great)
- G-Sync (requires new monitor, but I recommend you read about it).

*I was recommending AMD cards a little while ago, but now I'm recommending the GTX770 for this price range in large part due to the great games. If you subtract $150 from $330 that's $180 for the card.
