It can be, but it'd be much more worthwhile to get a new system given that CPU and socket are probably pretty old.

Might as well just stick with newer tech, an FX 6300 and an AM3+ motherboard should do nicely
However if you're not into gaming and just need a better CPU to get by you can pick up an AMD APU and an FM2 mobo, an A8 6600k quad core would be a nice choice
Since it seems you're using an older system with older components, a full system overhaul would be recommended
