If i install an old ahrd drive with another version of windows?

no problem - just be sure to check in bios the boot order /you might not want to boot from the old drive 
/
also, I'd backup my data on the old drive and format it asap - since windows just sits there and eats up useful space

yes you can do that. If you install a new driver and then install windows to that drive new drive while you have the old drive installed it will pretty much do a Dual boot where you can choose one drive or the other to boot from. This isn't a big deal if you don't want to do that since its just a few edits on the newly installed windows.
