How important is RAM to a GPU?

So, I'm looking to upgrade from a GTX 560 ti SC. I have an Intel i7 870 with 8gb or RAM and a 700 watt psu. What's a good upgrade that would hold me over for at least a year or two before having to upgrade my gpu again? I was thinking about a GTX 770 but they have so many different versions with different amounts of RAM.

Solution
RAM? Do you mean GPU memory? If yes, I would suggest a minimum of 2GB DDR5. If you talk about DDR3 PC memory, 8 is fine, in the 2 next years games will start using more than 8, ofcourse.

Yea, i mean't GPU memory. So would a GTX 760 4GB be better or a GTX 770 with 2 GB? I only plan on gaming at 1080p with a single monitor.

No. If you are going to play 1080p you dont need more than 2 GB. Go for the faster clock speed.

Would a 770 be enough to max farcry 3, skyrim and Tomb Raider at 60+fps? I have a lot of games I still have to play from the Steam sale and would like to to max them with at least 50-60 fps.
