I have a usb drive and I have grown tired of windows 7 AND 8. I started looking for a different OS and saw linux a while back in school but now I would like to try it. What software do I need to make a Installation of Mint 15 from my USB drive? Can I simply extract the iso to the drive just like any windows iso? or do I need something else? Assistance is always appreciated.

You can burn to a dvd and install from it but you cannot burn to a USB flash. Instructions to install a live linux on a flash to be used to install on your computer here http://www.pendrivelinux.com/liveusb-install-live-usb-c... it is best to go ahead and download the iso of choice and in the installer select install from iso image and navigate to where you downloaded it.

Another question I would like to know is there are many older posts regarding "hackshield" not running on wine but not explaining why e.g:If people were to try and play mabinogi the game would close and not work because "hackshield" gives a 108 error. Since I am considering linux I would like to know why this is a issue. Thank you

At winehq.org you can search for compatible software.

from there on apparently an older version

Quote:
to get past the hackshield error, go into wine config and add these files to the list, autoup.exe client.exe HSUpdate.exe npkcbk64.exe npkcmsvc.exe then set all of them to windows version windows ME, make sure you have the following things in your "Libraries" list on default settings, dx9 and all other files for it (use winetricks to get these) iexplorer7, mplayer10, and flashplayer. all installed through winetricks. it should run fine with all of this, if not then just use the game options to reduce settings and such, that should help. you'll need wine 1.0.1

is there a huge disadvantage of using 1.0.1 vs the newest wine? Besides the fact i cant do what i need unless i do use 1.0.1

That was just what was used to test an older game, generally newer versions are better all around.

Has there been any conversations regarding if they would ever implement the required stuff to use 1.6 AND still be able to use gameguard/hackshield?

Sorry i'm asking so much. I am just an overall curious individual.

I'm not a gamer so I don't keep up on those things but the extra software needed above are ms products and as such are propietary and can't be automatically included but easily added. More modern games are also less likely to need them. Can you imagine someone writing software that works only on iexplorer and not Firefox and chromium?

I dont expect anyone to have to spend their whole time focusing on just 1 area LOL... Would drive me crazy tbh.

The way u posted this though how the ms programs can be added easily. Forgive me if my assumption is wrong but are you saying long as I want to take the time to find these ms products I need I can simply add them to any wine above 1.0.1?

I say that because a previous quote said I was required to have 1.0.1

Instead of having to do a fresh download/install. If I have files or programs I want to run from my external is there commands to just allow use of said files? I can download fresh if I have to but I just want to make sure of what I need to do to run said programs

You have to install them in wine just as you would need to install them on a new system. If they run off a single exe file and don't need installing then you are good to go.
