Hi guys, I've been out of the tech loop for the last few years and I'm due an upgrade on my system.

My current rig:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
MOBO: ASUS Crosshair IV Formula
RAM: 4GB DDR3 1800
GFX: XFX Radeon HD5850
PSU: Corsair HX750W

I want to upgrade my graphics card and have two options:

-ditch the 5850 and get a current generation card (a 7970 would set me back ~$550 brand new)
-buy a second hand 5850 and run them in crossfire (a quick check on local listings shows I can pick one up for ~$100)

Would anyone recommend buying the new card for 5x the price over picking up the second hand card?
Are the setups comparible in terms of firepower?

Thanks for any input.

I'd ditch it for a better new card. From where you gona buy? $550 is stupid expensive for a 7970.

I'm from New Zealand so our prices are a bit inflated.

Crossfire 5850s should be about on par with crossfire 7770s which isn't that great considering that it's a dual GPU setup. Crossfiring should give you 7870 level performance though, so it is a very cost effective solution.

His card is probably a 1GB. Not good for the demanding games coming out.

Maybe link us to a store you can buy from. We'll see if you can get something better for the same amount.

Prices in NZ are through the roof to be honest with you, a 7870 costs $320+

A 660 also costs around $300

Then again if you're fortunate and have the 2GB version of the 5850, get another 2GB 5850 and crossfire and that should last you a fair while

Well if it's the 2GB version just get another 5850, though it's gonna suffer in games that don't like or use Crossfire.

Otherwise theres this 280X going for $487
