GPU usage drops to 0% games hangs for 5-10 seconds during 0% usage

My gpu sometimes goes to 0%, forcing my screen to freeze for 5-10 seconds. During the freeze i can hear audio well (Audio is not struck). For example: During GTA IV (if i am going in car, the display freezes for sometimes but i hear radio sound without any problems). Gone home, Grid2, Specops the line also i checked and the problem persists.
My system configuration:
Core 2 duo 2.93 Ghz
Intel DG41RQ motherboard
Transcend 2 x 2GB 800Mhz DDR2 RAM
Seagate 320GB 16mb cache 7200rpm (Got ctrl+alt+delete at startup problem and short test with seatools failed and got replaced with refurbished one with company warranty)
Zebronics 400watts economy series power supply
GPU : Palit Nvidia Geforce GT640 2GB DDR3 (Bought august 2013 only) has total 3 years warranty.
Samsung 17 inch syncmaster 794MG CRT monitor. (VGA connection to monitor)

You can save you time on GPU .....
You HDD is for exchange .....
Clicking sound on HDD is easy to repeat on MHHD or Butterfly test

Replace you HDD !

I checked hdd when i received using Seatools, that time it doesnt have errors, but now it sometimes make clicking sound, but how to prove seagate service providers that my hdd is not in good condition. Since i only get that clicking sound once in a 2-3 weeks. Now going to test GPU with furmark and soon i will update the results.

You HDD is for exchange .....

Yes you right. HDD seems to be problem.
Can you please get me a link for those software for HDD testing. I searched a bit but couldnt find a download link.
After running furmark in burn-in mode at 1240x1024 resolution with 2xMSAA, minimum fps:7 and maximum fps:531 (when i toggle between two images, one is fine other one lags), memory usage:7% core:901 [THROTTLE] -531 (What is this throttle?) Maximum usage:99% (i dont find drop but sometimes i didnt see the screen),, do i want to start gpu shark and then should have tried burnin test?

If you have clicking sound from the HDD this will never go away ...
The drive is death for me - period !

Boot from it
DOS programs -> HDD -> MHDD

(What is this throttle?) - this is you GPU CORE initialisation
Like car throttle ....

Looking you pictures you HDD looks OK
- on the right there are green orange and red brick - <150 ms ; <500 ms ; >500 ms
- in the midlle there are sectors in grey
- if any of the gray bricks are green orange or red > BAD HDD
- if any red text in the lower right state : ERROR 21234234 > BAD HDD

Now ..... i think you drive is working and suddenly gets this clicking sound - that`s where you GPU fails .......
WIth other word you will PERFORM NICE in the FURMARK until you HDD start to clicking .......

Download this tool : HDTune Pro v5.0.0 Portable
Run it
There is Health tab - look in the lower right status OK or not ?
There is Random acces tab - run it - i bebive this test will make the drive to click-problem

I advise you to use separete HDD to test you system - instal testing OS and look for the problem
The next suspect is the mobo - south bridge chip overheate ...

Now one of my friend child came and played grid2 game for around 15-20 minutes (during the play the game hangs for almost most of the time (long freezes[30-60 seconds] for every 10 seconds of play) but still he is 3 year old child,so continued playing). The game was hanging too much and atlast everything went off. Then i pushed restart button and now it says ctrl+alt+del to reboot msg displays (My old HDD also gives this message and then started to hang a lot so got replaced).. Is there a posibility, that my motherboard`s overheating causes the harddisk to fail?
Anyway going to HDTune pro as suggested by you and soon will uploading the results. :) :)

This result is taken after playing grid2 for 3 minutes (2 times game hangs and first hanging time:1 second and 2nd hanging time:2-3 seconds i didnt push much harder fearing of getting worse and so ended with alt+f4)

Dude you need to test wit some other components here.
- HDD is still under suspect - post CRYSTAL Disk Mark results
- VGA card
- PSU
If you not change and test i`m lost here .....
Freezin every 10 seconds would be easy to find with testing ,,,,,,
In the beginning i told you to FURMARK you system - what happend - post picture

Now i hear frequent clicking sound from my harddisk and my system hangs whenever that sound is heard.
And when it comes to FURMARK test, i ran it once for around 1hr and result is :
minimum frame:7 maximum frame:540 avg frame:77 ,,, actually i got greater frame with one image and very low frame with another. Max temp:72C it was steady on 70C with fan speed 60% and memory usage: 4% i dont think the test hangs.

Definitely as you said my HDD is problem, so I am going to replace it with new one, is WD10EZEX is good HDD?
but is there any possibility that my mobo or psu supplying high voltage to HardDisk and causing failure? is there any such chance of being so?

There is a good chance the GPU load drops to 0% because the CPU stops prepping frames. It may be due to something stealing CPU time from the game, or overheating, or as has been talked about, the HDD.

What does the CPU usage look like during those GPU drops? You might look at the process list too, it might show another program taking up all the CPU usage.

my processor temp goes maximum to 75C on gaming for long time which i noted long ago,, nowadays i cant even play for 30 minutes. But longer i play, more number of times it hangs and also it gets hang for even 1 minute but during starting stage it only hangs for 5-10 seconds,, Atlast comp gets switched off.

Doubt your judgement? Y so ? :) So you think there is possibility of another hardware problem apart from HDD?
Maybe within end of this week i will order for new HDD and probability will get one on next week starting. First thing i will test it with Hirensbootcd with the new HDD.
Also one doubt? If i choose one best answer (Probabily all the answers here are best answers and suggesions that helps me a lot) in this post will it end this thread compelety?

Definitely that is HDD fault and bought new HDD and this one works great. Nikolay you gave me many utilities part that helped me a lot and will also help me also in future. :) You great bro :) Keep up this good work :) Confusion in choosing the best answer :p But anyway, you gave me right on target on starting so choosing that one.
