Specs:
I5 2500K @ 4.0GHz
XFX 7970 GHz Edition
8GB GDDR5 Ram
Windows 7 Home Premium
CX600W Corsair PSU

When I play battlefield 4 my GPU usage spikes up and down.. does this mean that something is bottlenecking my GPU?

no battlefield 4 is quit unstable atm with performance like i'm getting a stable 70 fps wth my 7870 and fx 8320 while people with a 3960k and a titan get like 60 and below also did you download the latest beta drivers from amd. o and to answer your question no an i5 won't bottleneck an hd 7970 it has room for even more powerful gpus

I have just about the same setup, and I haven't noticed any significant bottlenecking. tho I'll admit that the i5 2500k has issues with giant multiplayer fire-fights even in bf3 so expect that to be a tiny bit slower
