GTX 780: which is fastest?

I'm building a new PC, and am likely to get a GTX 780. I was thinking of a top-end one, namely either the MSI Lightning, or Zotac AMP!, which are £450 and £400, respectively. These should both be faster than the Titan out of the box, but I'm not sure which one is better, or if there are even better GTX 780s out there.

Which one should I get? (Which one is fastest?)

Look into R9 290x I hate people that ALWAYS just assume nvidia.... This is BAD for competition and price just because people don't walk into the unknown. Also what display are we running this at? Resolution?

If its just 1080p then the GTX 780 would be a consideration because of its performance, however at high resolutions the R9 with its larger memory bus e.g. would be beneficial and more future proof.

Weigh things up, don't just go: GTX 780 or something from nvidia. When I rise to power I will have YOU PUNISHED!

PLEASE OH PLEASE, change your Avatar.

Wait for the aftermarket cooled AMD R9 290 BEFORE purchasing. The 290 is faster than the GTX 780 at a much cheaper price.

Even if you do not want to get the R9 290, the price on the GTX780 will be forced down by the intense competition.

Not a good time to be buying in that segment if you value your money.

We can be friends, nvidia has always taken advantage of consumers, therefore I will always try to find alternatives and the R9 fits well. But he is one of those Nvidia defaultists that I despise.

Calm down. Nobody likes a fanboy, but for all you know he does not know any better. So explain instead of rage.

Sorry but I'm a character that will take some time to get used to, I also dont consider myself a Fanboy for these 2 Reasons:
1: My laptop has a GT 540
2: My desktop as an ancient 8600 GT
Im bitter with Nvida at the moment because of the TITAN, GTX 680 e.g. pricing. By the way Im not angry, Im just naturally aggressive thus the name "Imperialist Militant" Also we can no longer be friends.

That was a complete waste of a post, because you made a huge assumption in that I am just going to nvidia because nvidia. I have never bought an nvidia product in my life, all my CPUs and GPUs have been AMD. I am much more an AMD fan than Nvidia, but I'm trying to look at this with as much unbias as possible, and just make the best consumer purchase.

I've spent several hours each day for the past few weeks looking into exactly what components to get, I've read reviews on loads and loads of graphics cards.

I am fully aware that the R9 290X is out there, but after much consideration, at the moment I think the 780 has more value to me. The R9 290X is $150 more, provides no performance benefit, and Crossfire doesn't work half as well as SLI does, which I will be doing in the future. (Yes, maybe Crossfire will work as well in the future, but we don't really know how much it'll be improved)

I will be using a 1080p monitor.

R9 290 is the same price as the cards I'm looking at and is not as fast. And SLI/Xfire in the future - yeah, I really don't know why I would buy the R9 290.

Also, what's wrong with my avatar? I like the picture :(
Particularly coming from a brony.

edit: just saw this -

Wow, really? That's a little presumptuous.

Sorry. I am, I was angry with something else when posting this.
Anyway you seem quite read, also on reading up for weeks:
I have been anticipating a new PC build for 3 years and still no luck. Well read on sandy Bridge for it to become obsolete e.g. This is why I still use a 8600 GT. So I understand.

Anyway with a 1080 Display the GTX 780 would also be my option, better value as the extra memory bus probably wont be too beneficial for a long time.

Have you ever considered going 5760x1080 resolution?

290 non x is $100 cheaper then the gtx 780 and yes it is as fast.As far as crossfire/sli one works just as good as the other.I have gtx 660 sli and 7970 crossfire and have had very little issue with both.

please change the profanity in your post or get it removed and receive a warning. The 290 is a better performer and due to the price the better option.

I am not taking either of you on NOR did I call you fanboys.

I was just saying, WAIT for Nvidai to respond with the GTX780 price drops.

Baner, no the R9 290 is not cheaper where I am,its the same pprice as the 780. It is NOT as fast, the benchmarks show that. And xfire is simply not as good as SLI.

Novuake: look at the benches, these 780s are clearky better. If it outperforms the R9 290X of course it outperforms the R9 290. And as I said, they are the same price.

Would anyone like to answer the actual question now?

their all the same... its how much heat they put out and how quiet they are depending on the fan design. other than that... its just luck of the draw on which chips are good overclockers. if you want a good asics rating from your gpu.... the msi lightnings is really the only choice you have.

otherwise... the one with the highest core clock is going to perform the best... but you may want to read a review on that particular card to see if it is noisy or puts out a lot of heat, but heat "shouldnt" be an issue for most unless you have a highly overclocked cpu and your trying to keep extra heat out of your computer case.

Stock vs stock, the Amp card is the fastest.

It looks like they both have great cooling, so if you want to overclock, the answer to your question will depend largely on the "silicon lottery".

ie which particular chip has the best overclocking ability...this varies from card to card, even on identical part numbers.

I got the 290 and sold my 770, so i'm not trying to be a fan boy, but i do have to say.
AMD prices were super high on 7000 series launch. It was more than the 580... Both companies do it, and the highest performance leader makes you pay more for the marginal increase - common market sense.

Righto, how quickly people forget about those $550-$600 7970s. Either company will do it if they have the best card and the competition is weak. When you look at the pricing and how hard the R9's need to be pushed to match their Nvidia counterparts, that's a great indication of where the two companies stand competitively in relation to each other.

Their are plenty of reasons to get a GTX 780 over an R9 card, not least of which is the noise factor, which also interplays with the heat levels, throttling core clocks, dual card performance, overclocking potential, and overall general consumer satisfaction. The R9 series is very much like the GTX 480 saga was a few years ago, great card, but I was happy to rid myself of it. A GTX 780 with three free games, some nice technologies, and none of those hassles is, to me, pretty obvious.

Of course, you have a couple GTX 780 options forthcoming this week. The GTX 780 Ti, with the full 2880 CUDA GK110 chip enabled, will be the single fastest GPU at that point. And then there is the overclocked "GHz edition" with a new GPU stepping from the original.

If I were buying one of the current GTX 780s, I would strongly consider the Galaxy Hall of Fame, it runs a very very close second to the MSI Lightning, but costs a bit less.

Non-reference coolers for the R9 290 and 290x are to release by the end of this month. I would hold off and see what happens then. It will likely be quieter and generate less heat, the only thing holding AMD back is heat & noise. Non-reference coolers should solve all those problems and for an affordable price. Since you're going to be waiting a few weeks, consider getting the non-reference 290x.

I'm personally getting a non reference R9 290. Also, if you plan on multi monitor & high resolution gaming, the R9 290x will serve you well.
The R9 290 is as fast the GTX 780 and almost £100 cheaper. The R9 290x is priced the same as the 780, and it's on par with the Titan, I believe.

I remember the gtx 580's coming out higher priced then the 7970's heck most 580's remeained at $500+ even after the 7970 cameout.Dont give this both companies do it crap.Name one single gpu amd cameout with that was remotley close to the titan in price or the gtx 780 for that matter.Nvidia prices are ridiculous for there highend cards to bad clueless people keep paying the money for them
