Recently I updated my Windows 8 Gaming PC (that I built myself) to Windows 8.1 and it has given me nothing but problems. Therefore, I would like to do a clean install of Windows 8 on my PC again (i.e. completely clear the drive and start over).

However, when I go to the Recovery page in Windows and select to do a clean install of Windows 8, it asks for the installation disk. Well, when I put in the disc that I used to install Windows 8 (the only disc I have, because I built the system myself), it says it is the incorrect disc. Why is that?

Because this method won't work, will simply running the setup.exe file on the disc do the same thing for me? Or am I just really out of luck?

Thanks for all your help guys!

Hello... re-boot your computer with the DVD in the drive, after you have changed and saved your boot order, in the BIO's, with the DVD drive listed first... look for the #F key option to delete all the existing partitons on your hardrive... re- start your computer... create a new Partition, using the full size of your hardrive... Quick Format that Partition... Start the Windows Install on your new created Partition location... allow Windows to install and re-boot your computer a few times, and Complete, before removing the install DVD.

Thanks so much for your response! This weekend, when I have plenty of time, I will be doing the clean install of Windows 8 and redownloading all the drivers I need, as well as all of my programs and games.

I've never had a problem with Windows 8, but 8.1 just destroyed my system!

Anyway, thanks so much!

Once you do get back to 8.0 and all of your programs and drivers installed, make a backup of the operating system drive (and store it on another drive). I use Acronis True Image Home to make an image of the entire C: drive from time to time and before installing any new programs. If something goes wrong, you can easily restore to when things were working fine without having to reinstall everything.
