Battle of the SLI's

Hi,

I'm currently deciding between 2 SLI configurations, the 770 SLI, and the 780 SLI. I want a good price efficient SLi config. For prices:

770 SLI = roughly $700
780 SLI = roughly $1000-1050

NO TITANS. Those things are unreasonably priced, and won't budge at all from that $1000 mark

Is the 780 SLI worth the extra $300? Will the 770's scale better than 780's?

I'm trying not to be biased against AMD. Getting 2 7970's would be cheaper, but risky. (Please don't call me a NVIDIA fanboy).

Hi there,

At 1080p there is really no point in going SLI. A single GTX 770 will max pretty much anything at 1080 and you can get a second 770 down the road. If gaming at 1080 get a single 770 and save your money.

If you move up to 1440p (2560x1440) then SLI makes sense. Make sure to check out the Korean overclockable monitors (Qnix something, check out 120Hz.net) for monitors you can get to 120Hz @ 1440p for about 350$!.

Even at 1440p i think I would recommend 770 SLI. the 300$ difference is not worth the extra 10-20% FPS in my opinion and 770SLI will run just about anything at decent FPS.

This isn't a question anyone can really answer for you. 2 780s will obviously perform better then 2 770s. They will also obviously cost you around 300 dollars more. No one, especially not people who have no idea what your disposable income is like, can tell you whether or not 300 is worth increased performance.

Wait and take a look at the 780Ti at $700 (2 days), it seems to be the fasted single GPU card there is, or perhaps the 780GHz Edition from Gigabyte, soon to be released. It performs between a Titan and 780Ti, would guess the price around $600

Then make a choice.

"disposable income" = budget?
I'm trying to be budget-y with my GPU, and trying to stay away from the $1000 range while having exceptional performance. But I can be flexible. I'm just trying to figure out if 2 780's will be worth the amount I give, compared to 2 770's

Those are great (emphasis on great) choices for single GPU users, BUT it won't be as exceptional as the suggestions I put. Especially since a 780 Ti is about the same price as 2 770's ($600-$700-ish). If the 770 SLI is significantly faster than the Titan, I know that I'm probably going to be disappointed with the 780 Ti as well. I'm also willing to learn about SLI better in order to achieve that performance.

Then your question really is how much money should you spend on SLI, as much as you can is my simple answer. If I could afford a set of 770s I would not buy 2 760s to save money. Would 2 760 do the job, sure, 2 770 do it better, you bet!

I would skip the 780 for SLI and go to the 780GHz Edition if I were to go above a 770, but I would not as I think a pair of 770s is about the best combo.

Personally u have a few routes

2 780s is worth it if you have the cash but 2 770s will do teh job at 1080p as well whats your resolution?

Native, It's 1920x1080 resolution. But I'm willing to get a new monitor with 2500 X 1600 (I think that's the resolution). Anyway, that might not matter as much as the settings I prefer in each game I play. I want Anti-Aliasing or Max settings on a game like, let's say, Battlefield 4.

Yea that puts a twist on things. If you want the best as of now i would go 2 780s which u wouldnt have to upgrade for a long time. As far as 2 770s i would get the 4GB for that resolution which wouldnt be as powerful as the 780s but it would get you past a 7990/690 performance. If you willing to go the single card route a gtx 780ti would be another good option and going sli down the road

I my self would of went 770s at 1440p as well but due to the psu limitations i have i opted for 760s. Next year im going for the gtx 870s which should be a pretty good bump as to what im running now.

I've seen that exact review before. Yes I will be gaming at a resolution higher than 1080p and will most definitely get 120hz or a 144hz monitor, and for that I need something high-end-ish. If you don't honestly believe that the 780's are worth it for the money, then what about AMD's star GPU, the Radeon 7990. That card scales well with battlefield games, and since I will be playing BF4, I'm worried it'll lose out to the 7990 (even if it is marginal).
