So its a monitor that you connect to the laptop and not the laptops monitor itself?

Ok what laptop do you have and Have you downloaded the latest graphics drivers?

The black space on the sides is usually an Aspec ratio setting or the resolution of the game being lower than the native resolution of the monitor.

If you can give me the make and model of the laptop I can check for you

Go into your graphics cards control panel and check what the aspect ratio is set to. Check to see that its 16:9. Also check that the games resolution is set to 1366x768 or another 16:9 resolution.
