How can I tell which component is faulty?

Hey guys,

Ever since a few days ago when the computer is powered on the BIOS screen looks a bit corrupted and Linux refuses to boot and Windows won't boot unless it's in safe mode or if I completely uninstall my Nvidia graphics driver.

I have tried resetting the CMOS and also have reflashed the BIOS but that hasn't fixed it. I did a memory test and my memory seems to be ok. I did an Intel burn test and it indicated instability despite me using stock settings and temperature is fine.

I was wondering if any of you could help me pinpoint the root cause here. I was thinking if it was the graphics card then that would explain the corrupted image on the BIOS screen and why the drivers won't work. But this wouldn't explain the CPU instability which I had tested not too long ago to be stable. I'm thinking it is the motherboard... do you think so too?

Thanks for your help

Jip I think you're definitely
right. It's definitely
a known issue with this board. I actually work alot with Gigabyte products and have experienced problems like this with the X58 Motherboards.

Tell me if you go into the BIOS settings go and check under pheripherals and then there should be a option where you can select the SATA boot mode. It wil either be

1. IDE
2. ACHI
3. RAID

Please let me know which boot mode is selected on your motherboard :)

I have it on AHCI atm although I have tried it in IDE.

Thanks a lot for your help. I'm actually just going to buy a new motherboard and sell my old CPU for a 2011 socket one since those motherboards are better.

Should I avoid Gigabyte in the future? I'm going to start shopping for a motherboard soon. I want a nice one for overclocking and I know Gigabyte was good for overclocking but it seems not good for having a long lifespan.

I would not avoid Gigabyte as the Company I work for sells Gigabyte Products and I've been a fan sinse I've been a kid. :)

I am A technician here so I can suggest a board for you that would last you and not give you any hasles.

The board that I would go for is either the

1. Gigabyte G1. Assasin 2

Here's a link: http://www.gigabyte.co.za/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4046#ov

2. Gigabyte X79-UD5
