I've just bought an HP Envy machine with pre-installed Windows 8 and my app store and PC Settings wouldn't open. I've tried almost every method explained on internet but nothing seems to be working. The App Store and the PC Settings window opens up for a second and then vanishes, and I'm left at the Start Menu!!!

These are the things that I've done so far:

1. App troubleshooter for Windows

2. SFC scan

3. wsreset.exe

4. Updating all the drivers (specifically graphics)

5. Updating the windows and anti-virus (I'm using a trial version of Norton Security that came with the PC with a 60 days subscription)

6. System restore to a previous level

7. Undo the changes to registry that I did to fix another problem

8. Run a clean boot (by deactivating all startup programs)

I wanted to upgrade it to Win 8.1 but my PC settings don't open!

Any help?? Do you think I can claim warranty based on this problem??
I bought a touchscreen laptop to enjoy the Apps but everything's just retarded so far!!!

You have not mentioned making sure that your account is tied to Microsoft. It now must be so to access the store. You can always make it a local account again should you wish.

You can also try deleting your store folder and have it rebuild itself again.

make sure you are not using a proxy.

edit: I go into more detail here ... http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-windows_store/cant-access-windows-store/108f47fa-6b84-4348-8616-82f75aa4cfdb

as for your pc settings opening ... a system restore to a point where your settings were working should have fixed that.

(by pc settings ...do you mean the window that pops up when you press windows key + pause break key? ... or the metro pc settings? (or both?)

I tried deleting my store folder from the start menu and it didn't appear back on it's own...i had to go to all-apps menu and pin it to start menu again! :(

Moreover, I am logged in though a microsoft account, and only then I was able to perform the above 8 diagnostics.

And finally, as opposed to the links you mentioned, I don't get any error messages....the app store sign just appears and then vanishes!

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do that but I will definitely try it if I can't fix this problem....cuz I have another laptop and i bought this touchscreen one just because i thought it would be more fun to use windows 8 on a touch.....but not like this!!!

I tried to contact the microsoft support but they refused to help saying I need to contact my manufacturer, and Australia is the only country in the world where you don't get round-the-clock support (wish they outsourced too!!!), so I'm waiting for next morning to contact HP and see if they can fix it for me!
