My question is which would provide superior gameplay for ultra hd gaming. Especially with Star Citizen having Mantle support now its down to 3 290s in crossfire or 2 290x. It would be around the same price 3 400 dollar cards or 2 650 cards.

Solution
theR9-290X is not $650. Also I believe that 3 290s would be faster as 1 card is only about 10% slower than a 290X, therefore 3 would be ~270% of 1 290X and 2x290X would be ~200% of 1 290X.

unless you were planning on gaming at 4k resolutions I wouldn't get more then 2 of them not to mention you would more then likely need at least a 1000 watt power supply to drive them with room for overclocking they are stated at 250 watts so 2 of them would be 500 watts + system hardware.

If you plan on using something like a triple screen setup I would not go with AMD due to their drivers right now. If your doing a single high res screen I think 2 290s would be a good bet. The review I saw on the card showed both it and the 290x were faster than the titan at 1440p and above. I think 3 290s or 2 290x is going to generate a crazy amount of heat so definitely keep that in mind.

Three GPUs can lead to a bunch of heachaches, and the performance bump of the third card as not a lot for thet rouble and $$.

Two of either of those cards will have no trouble with any game that utilizes CF well.
