Hello all,
I have a new build with a Sabertooth x79 and the new 4930k. I now am pretty certain that I can't get the machine to post because I need to flash the Mobo for the new ivy bridge E CPU. I have followed all the instructions on how to flash the bios using the USB method (the only method available to me as I can't even get into bios yet). I can not get the bios to flash. Period. I've followed the directions to the tee multiple times. Downloaded most current bios, put onto a fat32 formatted stick, renamed the file to exactly what asus says (SABERX79.ROM), and put it in and hold the button.... I have also tried 3 different USB sticks.

The cpu led remains red and the blue bios light doesnt even turn on.

Anyone knows what is my problem?

Regards.

I have read online using large flash drives (several GBs) doesnt work correctly and you need a 128mb flash drive or something around that size, Try that out. Ill see if i can find the article in the mean time.

There is a thin white sticker on the motherboard with the serial number on it. The last four numbers on the sticker are the number of the BIOS version the board ships with.

If your BIOS version is 1203 or older, please install the BIOS Converter and then the converter will update BIOS to 2002.CAP. The BIOS Converter is available in the BIOS Utilities.

Hi, thanks for your answers, would my bios version be 3305?

Im not sure what to do with the converter can you explain a bit more please?
Note that i have read many posts with this issue and in my case "the blue bios light doesnt even turn on. " I have the CPU installed btw.

Been waiting weeks for this pc because of delivery problems and after many hours i feel this motherboar has defeated me, you guys are my only chance.

Thanks a lot!

I dont have access to low size flash usb, but i will try to get one, any ideas?
The fact that the blue light doesnt even turn on could be because it is not detecting the usb with the bios? or should it allways turn on when you press it? could it be that it doesnt turn on because the motherboard is "broken"?
If anyone can answer this i will know if i have to replace the motherboard or try to flash it with a 128mb flash drive.

Thanks a lot.

Assuming your board is connected properly to the psu, the psu is plugged into the wall and turned on, and nothing is shorting out on anything, then if you have the fat32 formatted usb sticked plugged into the properly labeled usb slot and press the usb flashback button then it should eventually light up and start blinking

And it should be a .CAP file i believe, as well as not be inside any other folders. If after all that the light isnt even blinking then there might be other issues

3305 is the BIOS version on the label so according to the Asus guide, .CAP BIOS support BIOS version 2002 or later version, you should not be using a .ROM file after 2002.

With the 3305 BIOS you do not need to use the BIOS Converter Utility, that is for when the BIOS version is 1203 or older.

I wanted to post a solution as google led me to this thread. I had the same issue with a Sabertooth x79 and an i7-4820k. The bios flash issue / solution seems to work for most people, but what made this thread different was the symptom of "no blue light" when the bios button was pressed. No change of usb sticks, fat 16 vs 32, or naming re-naming of the file made a difference. I was then watching a youtube video of someone doing the flashback when I noticed him mention "you don't even need the cpu in for the flash to work". I thought, what the hell, I'll give it a try. I removed all peripherals. Only power and ram (and in retrospect I probably didn't need the ram) and I tried it. This time it worked. Something about the unknown cpu in the motherboard was confusing the bios enough that it couldn't initiate the flashback.

TL;DR - If you don't even get the blue light to come on when performing the flashback, remove the cpu and try again.
