I'am planning to buy a new desktop system but iam confused between core i5 4670 and core i7 4770............i dont' have any intention to overclock so i have choosen these two non k variants..........my requirments are: 1.)gaming, 2.)c,c++ and java programming, 3.)want to run my computer engg. bulky software applications, 4.)want to install virtual machines or want to multiboot my system also...................which one would be best for me and satisfy my needs.........and get my job done easily!!!!!

Hello... basically an i7 will give you 4 hyperthreading Cores for a total of 8 cores vs 4 cores available, to applications that will use them... Windows will use the the extra cores, Most Games will not... alot of modern Engineering, Graphic, and DAW programs will... do some research for the applications you plan on using in regard to HYPERTHEADING Core use in them, to determine the return in your investment. you will get about 25% performance gain in APPS that uses the hyperthreading cores.

The only difference is Hyperthreading which most games don't even take advantage of. Get the 4670k and save yourself some money.

Yeah, an i7 is a complete waste of money unless you want really fast rendering times and about 5-10% more performance in gaming. It's really not worth it in your situation.

If he is not OCing then the 4670k will have a decent performance boost compared to 3rd gen (if he was Overclocking then a 2nd or 3rd GEN CPU will be better) But he isn't going to OC so the 4670k will be better, plus it has slightly better settings (e.g. Power consumption settings).

Why a Xeon?!? Xeons are only meant for SERVERS!!! For gaming a Xeon is a quite big performance drop from an i5 4670k.

Hate to burst your bubble, but a Xeon 1230/1240 v3 is just an i7 without IGP and quick sync. The 1245 v3 has those features but having them or not having them doesn't mean a thing in a gaming rig. The OP said they were not overclocking. Only an overclocked 4670k would beat those Xeons.

fair enough, i thought you meant the Xeon E3 1230 - thats why i was saying the i5 was better. Sorry.

That 100mhz difference wouldn't matter any going with the 1230. It is more of the saving roughly $50 towards a better GPU while still getting the benefits of an i7's hyperthreading in newer titles. Crysis 3 and BF4 are just the beginning. With the new console ports we shall be seeing coming from PS4 and Xbox One, games will be more multithreaded than they have been in the past.

Yep, its fine. You wont see much of a difference between the 4670k and 3570k but as i said before the 4670k has a lot more options, modifications and settings.

The i7 is good if you are going to render videos as more cores/speed = faster rendering.

The 4670 and the 4770 are the same processor. The only real difference is that the i7 is higher binned (basically, it should technically be better), and because of that has hyperthreading enabled.
Hyperthreading gives you 8 threads instead of the standard 4 that the 4670 has, so it will perform better in multi threaded applications (video editing, audio editing etc). Though currently games don't really benefit alot of threads.
The i7 performs about 25% better than the i5, and only $100 more, so if you'll be doing alot of things that require the extra performance, otherwise, if you're just gaming, the i5 will do you just fine.

i7's also have more cache. Games are moving to the multithreaded arena. BF4 and Crysis 3 are just the beginning. If it isn't a K series, I wouldn't bother with an i5 at this point. I would rather have an FX 8320 over a locked i5.
