Can I add a 4gb stick to 2 2gb sticks?

Basically, i wanted to upgrade my RAM from 4gb (2x2gb) to 8gb. So I bought one 4gb stick thinking I had ordered 2x2gb sticks (the same kit as the current RAM). I haven't opened it yet because I don't want to open it, just in case it doesn't work. Can anybody tell me whether I can use it?

Hi,

Assuming the memory is same voltage, speed and timing (witch is probably not) you will only lose the dual channel but should work. Read in your user manual motherboard to see how you have to install the ram.
If it's not the same specs as the two others, you will probably run into problems (BSOD, slowdown, hiccups, memory not recognized in windows ect.)

I've got the 2 sets that I ordered here:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-1600MHz-HyperX-Memory-Module/dp/B00433L23O (current)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Technology-HyperX-1600MHz-Memory/dp/B0057Q4AGW/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1383765264&sr=1-1&keywords=Kingston+Technology+HyperX+BLU+4GB+1600MHz+DDR3+Non+ECC+CL9+DIMM+Memory+Module (just bought).
I believe they are they same specifications.
...Anyway. I put the ram in and the first thing I noticed was that when it got to the Windows loading screen, the Windows logo would not appear, so I would have to restart my computer. (I've taken it back out now)

Not same, the second you list is 1.7 the other is 1.65, both are 1600/9 - I wouldn't use either, at 1600 with voltage of 1.65 and especially not the 1.7, JEDEC standard for basic entry level 1600/9 DRAM is 1.5....don't want 1.65 unless in the higher freq of DRAM like 2133 and up...Intel calls for 1.5-1.55 basically max for 1600
