Hey all, i'm getting ready to buy my new graphics card, upgrading from the 5450. At first I was set on the toxic, but every store in the UK online has sold out or do not have any in stock. Now I have no idea when they will get back in stock, so I was contemplating getting the ASUS card.
My question is: is it worth waiting for the toxic or shall I go for the ASUS. Both cards are roughly the same price.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, new to this forum so be gentle!!;) I found this topic really interesting as I was also looking at these 2 graphics cards but after being told that sapphire r9 280x toxic "UK release" date has been pushed back until Dec(anyone know why?) I decided Asus was the way to go...I spent hours reading excellent Asus r9 280x top reviews and user reviews that getting the Asus seemed the best option. These 2 cards will retail at same price here (toxic about £10 more) Asus seems a great build and felt the lower 30hz factory overclock would not make any difference to gaming and Asus card is also a good overcocker....In the long run I dont think you can go wrong with either card but I decided to go for the Asus...
Thanks for the interesting thread guys, this site is really helpful to those like me that need all the help we can get!;) Kind regards

Yeah, I think I will play the waiting game, save some regret down the line. Thanks for your input, might try messaging suppliers to see if they have any idea when they will be in stock.Keith, I was told today its going to be around Dec 6th-7th before suppliers can get the Toxic, here in the UK...The release date was pushed back for some reason (not read any issues with the toxic, have u? anyway, Amazon are taking pre orders at £250 if you wanted o wait..Asus card is around the same price....as there is only a very small difference in performance and Asus is a better overclocker, I didnt feel the wait was worth 2-3FPS difference in gaming....kind regards

Yeah I messaged Overclocks and got the same response. I'm not sure if it is lack of stock or some other reason, sapphire are known for their build quality (at least in my experience). I'm trying to wait but getting really inpatient, especially since all my uni assignments are over and I a load of spare time
I may crack and get the asus card though, have fun with your new card mate
And again thanks for everyone's input it has been a huge help

The Toxic is the best 280X, go for the Toxicdefine best... msi lightning is consistently the highest performing stock and overclocker of every version of every video card for about 2 years now.
The 280X has only been out for about a month so I don't know what you are talking about

Cheers mate....I spoke with a few p.c build companies before ordering my build and every independent I.T company I spoke with said that out of the two Asus is the better option. I was really pushing for the toxic(as benchmarks looked so great!) but after being told the Asus is better made and a great overclocker...it was an easy choice for me! I might even pre order the toxic and have it on crossfire in the near future...but that will have to be my next upgrade!;) best wishes

Guys,
Just read comment below on another forum, sounds worrying if true....I have read that this model needs a very high power supply so maybe they are looking at ways to drop this and keep heat down?? Anyway, I guess lots of internet rumours but its interesting.....kind regards
"Well i have a bad feeling about this Bry, these Toxic have been recalled hence the delay"

The Toxic is the better overclocker but with anything, when overclocking more power will likely be usedThanks for your comments Patrick....Just seems strange to recall the uk release of this model unless there is other issues...could the factory overclock and higher voltage on this product be pushing this chip alittle too hard? I'm no expert but its enough to cause a little concern......As mentioned, the toxic was my first choice but the more I've read, the asus just seems the "safer" option and very little drop in performance..will be very interested to see more user reviews when its released here in the UK...thanks again for all the info on this site! big help...kind regards

I personally own the R9-280X Toxic and previosuly owned the Asus Matrix R9-280x. I dont know if it was bad luck or something but both cards were causing artifacting issues. I am currently RMA'ing my Toxic. I would wait till they make the revisions to the card which is late November but I would still wait a bit longer because the Revision is going to be a different silicon. The new chip will have lower power consumption and heat output.

Hi, this is interesting..thanks for your comments! I have read on another forum that the first release might give better performance than the new chip later in Nov but I guess we'll find out soon..I've copied below the comments I read on another site...thanks
I found this...not sure if it is of any help?

Hi there
Just had a conversation with one of AMD's board partners in China, this is the conversation:-
[08:37:20] CHINA: yes, new shipment from AMD will be XTL instead of XT2
[08:40:39] GIBBO: what is the exact difference please?
[08:41:34] CHINA -: well, i do not know know exactly what is the difference
[08:43:12] GIBBO: Please try to find out m8
[08:43:23] CHINA -: ok ok
[10:11:03] CHINA -: Mate, just checked. There is no difference on the specification between XT2 and XTL. The only difference maybe that the overclockability of XT2 is better than XTL.
[10:14:27] GIBBO: why is that m8?
[10:14:30] GIBBO: different power design?
[10:14:53] GIBBO: Will XTL feature the new HD sound found on R260X and R290's ?
[10:15:21] CHINA: no, XTL does not support True Audio
[10:15:55] GIBBO: Why do you think it won't clock as well?
[10:16:35] CHINA: well, i got this from my product development people
[10:17:12] CHINA: maybe related to the screening
[10:17:37] GIBBO: so in short current version is better for OC then
[10:17:48] CHINA: you are correct
Seems that current R280X are using the full blown HD 7970 GHz chip and the new XTL version will be a lower cost design which gives the same performance out the box, but won't have the OC headroom of the current chip.

That seems interesting.if you are going to grab the Toxic there isn't much OC headroom to begin with. The asus definitely can be overclocked much better and perform about as well with a stock Toxic but requires some fine tuning. Temps will be better with the toxic currently my Toxic is sitting at 70c under full load with fans at about 60% idles around 30-32. The Asus Matrix was doing about the same but less performance but once i overclocked it the temps were a bit hotter and the performance was about the same.

Hey guys, I actually have a Toxic that I picked up from Amazon bout a week ago, and I think it is worth waiting for. I had the same dilemma as the OP but decided to stick it out till it became available. I got it during the 2 hour timeframe after Amazon got it in stock before it sold out. It really is a great card. Besides maxing out everything I've thrown at it, heat has not been a problem (I don't think theres been a recall). So if you have the patience, i would wait until December when jt becomes available in the UK again, you won't regret it.
