Windows 8 computer not hibernating

I have my Windows 8 computer set to hibernate after 30 minutes of inactivity. This has worked fine for the past year. I recently set certain folders to "Share" with other computers on my home network. Since doing that, the computer won't hibernate after the 30 minutes (unless I manually hibernate it), even when the other computers are turned off and not using files on this computer. Under task manager/services, there is a service called WPMNetwork SVC with the description " Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" which is running. When I stop the service, the computer will go into hibernation after 30 minutes. Anyone have any experience in this area or suggestions for a workaround?

Hmm... lets force hibernation off, reboot, and then turn it back on again. Easiest way is to open an administrative Command Prompt by pressing the Windows Key + X to open the Power Users menu, and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the list. Type the following command below:

powercfg -h off

Reboot the machine, repeat the steps above and then type

powercfg -h on

Also set the time it takes to hibernate in the power settings down to a couple minutes when you begin troubleshooting so you don't have to wait so long.
Check all of the network devices in Device Manager to ensure that they are set to only allow a Magic Packet to wake a system up. Something may be broadcasting traffic somewhere else on the network that your machine keeps picking up and preventing it from going to sleep. You will find the setting in the Power Management tab of the devices Properties menu in Device Manager.

Here is what I found so far. In the device manager, there are 2 network adapters-"Microsoft Kernel Debug Network Adapter" and :Qualcomm Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigbit Ethernet Controller". Only the 2nd one has a power management tab and "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer" is checked. Still, the computer did not hibernate overnight after Windows Media Center finished recording a TV program as is normally does. I manually stopped the WPMNetwork SVC this morning, and it did not hibernate after 30 minutes. One of the other computers on the network was in "sleep" mode (windows 7 computer). I shut the computer down, and this computer went into hibernation after about 15 minutes. The Windows 7 computer was not using any files on this computer; no applications were running except Google Chrome.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know about the Windows + X shortcut. That will come in handy. I think I have narrowed it down to having other computers on the Homegroup not completely turned off. Yesterday, I shut down the other computers, and after recording a TV program this computer went into hibernation and stayed in that state overnight. When I booted up one of the other computers this morning, this computer came out of hibernation as soon as I logged in to the other computer. I read another thread on this forum that someone was having a similar issue on a Windows 8.1 machine (I am on Windows 8), and it was related to the Homegroup.
