Is My Motherboard Dead?

I was using my computer last night when the screen went black but the computer stayed powered on. I forced my computer off and tried to restart but then it would not power back on and has been completely unresponsive. There was no burning smell and I was not doing anything particularly stressful for the computer. I run everything at stock settings, and everything was fine since I put it together about a year ago.

My first thought was that the PSU had died, but I tried shorting it and it powered a couple of fans no problem. I then wondered if my case power button had died or had come loose, but I tried shorting the power switch on my motherboard and got no response. I am thinking that it might be the motherboard at this point but would appreciate any thoughts. Note that I unfortunately do not have a case speaker installed. Thanks in advance.

Always have a case speaker because it helps a lot. If the board is still good, then it will beep when there are no ram installed.
Do you still have that case speaker?
Remove the CMOS battery and unplug the power cord, wait about 30 seconds or so 1 minute is better. Then put the battery back and try turning it on.
sometimes a USB device may cause the system not to boot. Remove all devices except monitor and power cord and see if that works.

unfortunately i don't have the case speaker. i will try your suggestion re: the CMOS battery. what is hanging me up is that it is at "brick" level right now. i heard of USB devices preventing proper booting, but one would think that the thing would at least power on

the system does have onboard graphics, and i tried booting without the card yesterday, but no dice. i don't have a spare motherboard to test around with.

thanks. i think this makes sense (unfortunately). i will credit this as the solution later tonight unless someone has something else.

Remove the board out and test it on the outside, try reinstalling the CPU. But if that doesn't work, then the board is no good. Try one stick of ram at a time, look for blown or convex caps.
Can you take a pic of your board and post it here?

thanks. i think i pretty much decided it's the board. the board itself looks fine (no caps blown, etc.) but there seems to be nothing left that could be bad. remember, i stripped this thing to psu, cpu, and heatsink and even shorted the power to see if the case power button went bad, but nothing happened. psu shorted fine by itself though.
