My Hard Disk size was 320 GB (With 3 partitions C, D, E) when I gave to Service to re-install the OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit in my Laptop. After Service, it was only 286.34 GB. With no partitions being done. All in C drive. Service person says that, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit will occupy that much space. But, when I bought the same Laptop, the Hard Disk capacity was 320 GB when the said OS was already installed. What happened to my hard Disk? If the person is right, then how come, it was 320 GB when I bought with the same OS? Where is the rest 34 GB?

There is a difference between capacity and free space. Did you have 320GB of free space before you took it in for service or was that the capacity of the drive? Free space is the amount of space not occupied by Windows, installed programs and files. Was anything installed that you did not have before? A hibernation file can consume a fair amount of space. The formatted capacity of a drive is less than what is stated by the manufacturer. For example, a 320GB drive has a formatted capacity of 298GB.

Sir,
Thanks for your reply and link. Mine is Sony VAIO Laptop with Internal Hard Disk Capacity as 320 GB. Service person told that he formatted my HDD. After Formatting, the total space of HDD itself was 286.34GB. Even, if it is correct that a 320 GB HDD will have only 298 GB Capacity, What about the rest 13 GB space? How can we recover that space? Should we format it again and re-install the same OS? Or is my hard disk got corrupted due to repeated formatting?

The 13GB of missing space could be the Windows installation. Hard drive corruption is not likely an issue. If you right click on the drive and then click on properties you should see Used space, Free space, and Capacity. Post the numbers for each is you are still not convinced the numbers are right.
